Converting to a Social Enterprise

Not all social enterprises are started from scratch, many begin life as unincorporated groups, charities, as sole traders, partnerships or as private limited companies before becoming social enterprises. Start-up support and advice can often be accessed by organisations seeking to become social enterprises.

Why would an organisation become a social enterprise? Charitable status can restrict trading activity, sometimes changing legal status or starting a trading arm can be a solution to this issue. For privately owned organisations which have always traded for more than profit, formally becoming a social enterprise can help prove that you practice what you preach.

Exploring social enterprise? If you’re fact finding and not sure whether social enterprise is an option for you take a look at  What is a Social Enterprise? and our Resources section for more information and case studies.

If your organisation is considering becoming or starting a social enterprise there is a range of free and subsidised advice and training available from business advice organisations that specialise in social enterprise. Contact SEWM CIC for signposting to  local agencies and finance providers.
