SEWM CIC reaches milestone followers on Twitter!

Social Enterprise West Midlands CIC (SEWM CIC) has reached a fantastic 5,000 Twitter followers! The whole team would like say a huge thank you to everyone who has followed, re-tweeted and linked to our content. We are hugely proud of reaching such a milestone, but we couldn’t have done it without you!
So why does this mean so much to SEWM? We are a very small team, based here in Birmingham, with multi-faceted roles and a large membership network which we deliver a range of services to across the Midlands. Social media has therefore become an important digital ‘member of the team’ which enables us to share the fantastic work of our members from across the region, promote social enterprises and keep up-to-date with all the news and information from the sector.
My first blog when I joined the SEWM CIC team back in 2012 was all about my passion for social media and digital marketing. At the time I hoped that awareness of its potential to raise the profile of businesses, industries, important issues and innovations would lend itself to delivering better customer service, a key tool for communication and promote the social enterprise sector. The team here, collectively, have managed to do that! We regularly use social media to share the achievements, news and information about our members in the network, help connect like-minded businesses, link to key sector news, opportunities and resources and most importantly, be involved in the conversation!
SEWM also regularly use Twitter for promoting our events and live-tweeting from our conference. We are delighted every time we hold a conference, announce our event #hashtag and see the level of engagement and conversation that takes place not just before the event but throughout the conference and after. For SEWM, we want as many people as possible involved and able to access the important discussions and information from the sector leaders we have at our events – even if you can’t attend! We were amazed that our Social Value in Construction Conference (#buildsocvalue) held in April 2015 had so much social media buzz and conversation taking place we were trending regionally!
We have also used social media to announce the appointment of exciting new roles in the sector, Chris White MP Social Value Ambassador in June 2013, most memorably, and get involved in national campaigns like Buy Social and Social Saturday, led by Social Enterprise UK (@SocialEnt_UK).
Beyond that the SEWM team regularly advocate the benefits of social media to social enterprises and charities to help them raise their profile. We always link to fantastic resources like Social Misfits Media (@MisfitsMedia) and Unity Trust Bank’s (@unitytrustbank) About that First Tweet and Something to Tweet About which share good tips, how to’s and best practice examples from the sector. I also developed a Social Media Toolkit for SEWM, exclusively for our members to help them understand their use of social media, provide tips on good content and how their social media strategy can fit with overall business goals. SEWM were also pleased to work with John Taylor Hospice (@jthospice), a fantastic social enterprise using social media effectively to raise awareness of their organisation, to deliver a free PR Media workshop in July for social enterprises and entrepreneurs looking to raise their profile in the media.
I will repeat what I wrote in that first blog in 2012: Social media is one of the vital components to social enterprises, charities, community projects and other organisations and needs to be harnessed effectively to promote and connect such great businesses.
SEWM do measure what we do on social media, as we value its importance to our marketing plans. We don’t just aim for numbers of followers, but the quality of who we connect with and the level of engagement and value created.
